Shazam is a mobile application that allows users to identify songs by simply holding their phone up to the audio source. When activated, the app analyzes the audio sample and matches it to a database of millions of songs to give the user information about the artist, album, and song.
The term "Shazam" was originally used as a magic word in the comic book series of the same name, where the protagonist would say it to transform into a superhero with powers including superhuman strength, flight, and lightning manipulation. The creators of the app decided to use the name because they believed the experience of using the app could feel like a form of magic, instantly revealing information about a song just by listening to a few seconds of it.
Shazam was created in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang, and Dhiraj Mukherjee and was initially launched on the Nokia 9000 Communicator. The app has since been downloaded more than one billion times and is available on both iOS and Android devices.
